Senior Merle Staten is an up-and-coming drummer and an already experienced music producer. His passion for music started when he was just two years old. “My pops inspired me since he played drums when he was younger,” he said.

From that early start, things just picked up from there. Staten got his first tiny red drum kit when he was five years old and he progressed at his own quick pace. He never sought any private lessons until last year. During middle school, he took drumming to the next level by getting involved in programs outside of school and connecting with professionals.

His musical preference is jazz, but he also has a love for fusion and hip-hop. Performing remains a big part of his life. He has performed at a jazz festival in the Dominican Republic and in the Atlanta Jazz Festival. He finds inspiration in things other than music, including art and fashion. “I look toward any place where I can get ideas,” he said.

His favorite drummers are Chris Dave and Thomas Pridgen. His biggest inspirations are Pharrell, Robert Glasper, Art Blakely, Isaiah Rashad, 808Mafia, MetroBoomin’ and J. Cole.

Currently, he plays for Audio Wolf and with Georgia State’s jazz orchestra. He also frequently gets invitations to play with other bands on a freelance basis. He describes music as a constant learning experience. “There’s always something different and something new. People don’t think that music can control the person you are, but it can,” he said.

For this senior, graduation is less than six months away. This suits him because he plans on kicking off his music career as soon as possible. He aspires to meet different artists and performers and he hopes that his passion for drumming will take him around the world. “Even if my name isn’t everywhere, I still want to make it to that level.” Staten said.

The music process can definitely be a difficult journey, but no matter what Staten said he will remain true to himself and his goals. “The future is now for me and I can’t wait to get it all going,” he said.
