The North Atlanta Environmental Club has plans to put a garden on the top of the school parking deck. Club members plan on working on the verdant project in March. After the garden is finished and thriving, it’s envisioned that there will be a plethora of seasonal and beautiful plants.

“We wanted to do something that would be interesting for us to do and beneficial for the school to have. Our world can always use a bit more green,” said Caroline Watson, Environmental Club president.

Mr. Mike Hutchens is the faculty adviser for the Environmental Club.

Club members are slated to collect wood needed to create raised beds for flowers and vegetables. They plan on getting the wood from bamboo tree patches found in the wooded parts of campus south of the Warrior Field where the track team practices.

The garden project will involve three different gardens. Club members will create a Zen garden in the hopes of bringing a place of tranquility that all students can enjoy. Another garden section will be vegetables. The last garden section will feature flowers that will add color and beauty to an otherwise drab cement expanse. The garden will bring life to the school and will be completely sustainable with an installed irrigation system that will rely principally on rainwater collected from barrels. Since the garden will be so exposed to sunlight from such a shade-less perch, irrigation will be a major necessity.

The top of the parking deck is roughly an acre in area. Few if any cars are parked up there so Environmental Club members will have ample room to tackle all of the agricultural tasks they have in mind.

Environmental Club members have high hopes for the school’s new green addition. The garden on the top of the parking is sure to bring life and joy to the students and staff.
