Overrated Elevators: Why Students Should Take the Stairs

Do you like being crushed in between two people in a cramped space? Do you like feeling scared by jumping or screaming in the elevator? Do you like being late for class because of a slow, faulty elevator? Do you like being disgusted with the items left behind to rot as you ride to your destination? No? That is why I believe that you should take the stairs instead. It only makes your school life easier, both physically and mentally.

Anyone who rides the elevators consistently knows that they aren’t always the easiest. Often, it takes ages to arrive, not to mention a plethora of destination buttons that don’t even work! Lunch is by far the worst – rowdy kids trapped in one elevator, leaving another large group of students behind, waiting for them to come back. It just doesn’t work. Taking the stairs not only gives room for other students who actually need a lift, but they also allow for convenient timing and personal space. 

Yes, taking the elevator helps a lot. You get a (sometimes) faster ride to your destination while being able to chat with your friends without running out of breath! Taking the elevator is definitely the popular mode of transportation, but is it the best?

Of course, if you’re in a wheelchair, have asthma, or a class on 11, definitely do not take the stairs. But, for those who can, the stairs are your friend. Taking some stairs is a great way to break from sitting in class all day, allowing resilience for both your legs and your lungs. We have the main stairs, the academy stairs, and the emergency stairs. That’s three stairwells that you can take to get to your classes on time rather than continuously being late because of an elevator. Also, stairs cannot break down, elevators can. Our elevators have malfunctioned multiple times, leaving dozens of students cramped and stranded. Taking the stairs, even if tiresome, allows more breathing room, less stress, and better health.

In summary, taking the stairs is the superior way to move around the school. The elevators’ positives don’t outweigh the stairs’ negatives. Of course, education is important, so if you want to get to class on time, get better exercise without taking up your free time, without facing the stress of the elevator. Take the stairs and have an easier school life!
