Stepping out in front of a cheering crowd, the nerves still ever present, only experience can quiet the immense pressure. Young athletes dream of going pro at their desired sport, but in some way shape or form, that dream starts with a Varsity experience. Few are able to achieve this accomplishment, but at North Atlanta, there are several exceptional athletes talented enough to do it all four years of their high school career.
Liza Hanley is a senior on the Dubs soccer team—yet it was only a few years ago that she was a wide-eyed freshman ready to make her mark on North Atlanta athletics. Accompanied by the extreme anticipation of creating an impact, Hanley found herself as one of the few newcomers on the squad. An unfamiliar place mixed with a new environment was tough. Despite this, Hanley’s impact on the pitch and with her teammates was special. She credits much of her growth to the example set by former: teammates Ansley McCaffrey and Virginia Odom. They were able to balance academics and athletics with ease—a balance Hanley has come to master herself. “I feel like I’ve got the system down,” Hanley said.
Another master of their craft, Drew Coleman is a four-year veteran on the lacrosse team. Not a huge surprise to many, but Coleman is also the captain of the team—a goal that’s been his since he fell in love with the game. The passion has always remained constant for Coleman, yet it was his mindset that has evolved. A resilient leader nowadays, leading by example and keeping his team in check, was once a kid trying to prove to himself and his peers that he belonged. Coleman says his growth as a player and person is attributed to the wisdom gained from the past three years. “It’s not about one player giving the team a spark, but the collective coming together to bring that energy,” Coleman said.
Filled with a competitive spirit and hunt for success, the road to glory for Scottie Brown hasn’t always been easy. Apart from the rugged terrain and exhausting journey a cross country athlete must face, injuries have seeped into the track for Brown. Despite these setbacks, Brown has leaned on her teammates in a unique relationship that encourages pushing others so that they will push you. With time, she’s learned to value the obstacles and embrace the leadership. “There’s more responsibility, but with that comes more appreciation and excitement for the races,” she said.
Whether on the soccer field, lacrosse turf, or rigid cross country course, these superstar seniors embody what it means to be a varsity athlete. Through dedication, resilience, and preparation, three gifted individuals have learned how to make an impact on and off the field.
