Bringing in a diverse range of student hobbies isn’t unusual at North. No matter where students are in the halls, they can see murals from young high school peers and tangible artwork from others, even hearing melodic music from the 3rd-floor hallway near the gym. So many hobbies exist in our world today, and many people find a way to develop a deep passion for at least one. Some even devote their careers to their pastimes, like those in the fashion, performing, or writing departments. Not only are people’s pastimes entertaining and engaging, but many are more than what meets the eye. They are an escape from reality for some, teaching discipline, passion, and drive to others. Nonetheless, student hobbies are more than what they seem on the outside.
The large population of NAHS means many different hobbies. Many students discover unique ways to pass the time and entertain themselves. During the school day, numerous students love to sketch and draw during classes. Some are able to practice their hobbies during their electives, like in art, music, dance, or theater classes. Junior, Christopher Arzate, notices the different pastimes students participate in during the school day or during classes. “Mostly every class that I’m at, there is always someone drawing or sketching,” he said. “There’s also sports that everyone is talking about, either American football or Fútbol.”
Outside of school, students take pleasure in other activities. Some read, some attend sports after school, and some hang out with their friends. Many teens spend a lot of time on social media, which can take up hours a day. Sophomore Addie Patton said people often get caught on social media for too much time and could benefit from devoting time to other things, like hobbies instead. “A hobby more people should do is finding your own niche thing you like and devoting time to it instead of just scrolling,” she said.
The world today offers so many different activities for so many different people. Finding a hobby, whether it is physical, intellectual, or creative, can offer opportunities for growth and can be a valuable way to spend one’s free time. North has so many students and so many hobbies, no matter how unique they are. They keep many students active, passionate, and motivated. Whether these activities are for fun or for relaxation, they are an important part of many students’ lives beyond schoolwork. They create a culture at this school that helps foster and influence creativity, individuality, and dedication.
