Tired of doing your homework between the same four walls? If so, you’re not the only one. Distracted by the lure of a comfy bed, the smell of food in the fridge, or loud families, some students are not able to fully concentrate in the comfort of their own homes. However, skipping homework is not an option, so students have found alternative study spots, including coffee shops, libraries, bookstores, and outdoor locations.
Coffee shops are popular locations to “lock in” on work, as they offer an exciting change of scenery, as well as a bite to eat. It is nearly impossible to visit the West Paces Starbucks after school without spotting several North Atlanta students meticulously grinding away on assignments. Junior Elizabeth Adams swears by her method of completing work at coffee shops with a side of her signature “Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso” and an occasional chocolate croissant. As a coffee shop connoisseur, Adams’ favorite local spots are the Marietta Starbucks, which is open until 10:00 p.m., and Dancing Goats Coffee in Buckhead. “The second I step into a coffee shop, I feel really productive,” said Adams. “The food and drinks also feel like a reward for all the work I’ve done.”
While some enjoy the murmur of side conversations or soft music as background noise for a concentrated mind, others prefer complete silence, where the only “noise” is their own thoughts. These particular students are drawn to the stillness of places like libraries and bookstores. At the library or in a bookstore, people can enjoy a quiet environment with plenty of academic resources at their disposal. Sophomore Mahannah Hoskins enjoys visiting the Fulton County Library or Barnes & Noble, both of which are open to the public. “Ever since I’ve started going to the library, I’ve realized how little I get done at Starbucks or my house,” said Hoskins.
Sitting inside for eight hours at school can be draining, so getting outside can be a nice change of pace. Nature offers sunshine, a slight breeze, and relaxing bird noises, all of which are unavailable to students during educational hours. Doing work at the park, by the pool, or simply in one’s front/back yard, kills two birds with one stone: you complete your work while getting your daily dose of Vitamin D. If the weather permits, junior Lily DiCristina takes her homework outside to a cushioned bench on her back porch. Surrounded by tall, green pine trees, her backyard is the perfect oasis to tackle her challenging workload. “I get distracted super easily whenever there is any type of conversation around me,” said DiCristina. “When I’m in my backyard, though, I feel super relaxed because no one can distract me, and the fresh air is calming.”
There may never be a “perfect” study spot, but exploring different environments can spark new motivation. Who knows? You might stumble upon a hidden gem that allows you to complete work in record time.
