Lockers at North Atlanta are a very controversial topic. Is it beneficial to the students, or is it just a waste of space? It can take a long time to walk from your classroom to your locker, get what you need, then walk all the way to your next class, and no one wants to be late. Many prefer just to carry all their belongings, or, if they are old enough to drive, keeping them in the car is the right choice. From heavy backpacks to different sports to having too much to carry, some students need their lockers, and others would prefer to stay away.
Throughout the day, students have a lot of school supplies to carry, but the people who play sports have double that—an extra set of clothes, shoes, sports equipment, and more. Olivia Goins, a junior, uses her locker to hold her sports equipment and emergency supplies, like snacks. This way, going to your locker during the day is not necessary; instead, student-athletes go before and after school. Even though it is not the most convenient, she is grateful for her locker. “If I did not use my locker, my backpack would weigh at least 20 pounds,” said Goins.
Numerous students hate the idea of a locker and don’t want to waste their time with it. There are only eight minutes between each class, so walking from one class, unlocking your locker, getting your stuff out, and then walking all the way to your next class cannot be easy. Alex Kuo, a senior, agrees with this statement. He used to use his locker, but then it became too inconvenient. Now, he puts his fencing equipment in Mr. Ehrman’s room before school and picks it up at the end of the day. “I did not even bother to get a locker this year; it wasn’t worth it,” said Kuo.
Juniors and seniors just got new cars, and they are excited about not only having the freedom to drive but also having a built-in storage unit with easy access. If you have to pack your stuff into your car at the beginning of the day, why not just leave it there? Katriane Pawlowski, a junior, simply leaves the things she will not need during the day in her car. “If I have to move my car after school, why don’t I just get my stuff then?” said Pawlowski.
Lockers at North Atlanta remain a debated topic. For many, they are helpful, especially student-athletes, but for others, it is not worth the time and energy.
