Since its inception in 1968, thanks to Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Ronald Reagan, who extended the week-long celebration to a month-long celebration of culture, Hispanic Heritage Month has been a way to highlight Hispanic Traditions, while simultaneously sparking interest and pride in the community. It is no secret that North Atlanta’s very own Hispanic Heritage Month Society puts on a spectacular showcase each year, but the 2025 showcase promises to be the most ambitious one yet.
At the Hispanic Heritage Month showcase, students can expect a plethora of performances by students in the club, from various dances and songs that represent Hispanic culture. Thanks to North Atlanta’s Empower Club, a non-profit organization made to uplift Hispanic communities through education, the Hispanic Heritage Society received a grant of $2300 to aid with the funding of the showcase. Some of the dances include Bachata, salsa, reggaeton, folklórico, and cumbia. In addition to songs picked by seniors, there are songs in the Hispanic Heritage Month club. Junior Lucy Shahan, vice president of the Hispanic Heritage Society, expresses her excitement for this year’s showcase in her new position. “We’re not doing a ton for Hispanic Heritage Month,” she said. “Just having pride, and you know our culture.”
For seniors, the showcase carries a sense of nostalgia as their high school years are sadly coming to an end. The Hispanic Heritage Society has given a community to Hispanic students at North Atlanta, and students are sad to leave it all behind once they go beyond the 11th stories. This is true for senior Sofia Lora, one of the society’s presidents. Lora may be leaving all the memories behind, but she is thrilled for her last showcase. “As a senior, I’ll definitely miss being a part of such an amazing tradition we have here at NAHS and will always carry those memories with me,” she said.
In addition to the Hispanic Heritage Showcase, the Hispanic Heritage Society also encourages students to participate in spirit week. The themes for the spirit week have yet to be announced, and it is deeply encouraged by Shanan to stay tuned. “The themes for each day will be listed on the Hispanic Heritage Society’s Instagram page,” she said.
With its mix of music, dance, and pride, this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is set to honor tradition while leaving lasting impressions for all who take part, both performing and the audience.
