Spring this year brought the long-anticipated baseball season. Along with the season came long nights at the baseball diamond, the occasional hot dog from the concession stand, and many hurrahs from the bleachers. For every baseball team, there’s a need for much logistical support. How, exactly, does the Warrior team keep operating like clockwork? The Diamond Girls of North Atlanta are the young women who unfailingly support baseball players and coaches with behind-the-scenes logistical support.

In total there were 57 Diamond Girls this year and the group’s faculty sponsor is math teacher Sarah Burns. Collectively they took on a wide range of support activities. These included making spirit signs, supporting individual players with goodies and encouragement, working the concession stand during games and promoting baseball schoolwide.

Where goodie bags are concerned, the girls make one for an assigned player. They can contain Powerade for hydration along with Big League Chew, sunflower seeds or even some Jolly Ranchers. “If you can believe it, players really look for these goodie bags,” said freshman Annabel Santoli.

Sophomore Delaney Elder decided to be a Diamond Girl this year because of her love for baseball as a sport and also because she likes supporting the school’s athletic teams. In the fall she plays on the Warrior volleyball team and she said being in the group is a good way to continue her involvement in athletics. “I grew up around baseball a lot so I love getting the chance to watch it,” she said.

Elder said she knew a lot of the varsity players and developed friendships with even more players in the course of the season. “They are a fun group of guys and we certainly have fun joking around the occasion allows for it,” she said.

Santoli said she enjoyed cheering on the team during games. “We’re here to help and to build up team spirit,” she said.

Head Coach Stephen Muoio said baseball at North Atlanta would not be the same without the Diamond Girls. “They serve a support role behind the scenes and much of what they do is integral in helping the success of the program,” he said.

It is safe to say that baseball games wouldn’t be the same without the support, cheer and help from the North Atlanta Diamond Girls. When it comes to helping the baseball team, they cover all the bases.
