North Atlanta teams have had their share of heartache in the competitive 6 AAAAA region. An upcoming move to the Region 7 AAAAA could make for a positive change of fortunes, particularly for the Warrior varsity football team which went winless in its 2013 campaign.

A high school’s placement within a GHSA region has a big impact on its “win-loss” ratio. Coaches, players and fans all want their school in a competitive division and region. However, if the competition within the region is not balanced, some schools have an advantage, while other schools face steep disadvantages.

The school’s change in region will go into effect in the 2014-2015 school year.

While the roster of schools is not entirely finalized, North Atlanta’s new region is expected to contain the following high schools from around metro Atlanta: Riverwood, Kell, North Spings, Creekview, Sequoya, Cambridge, Forsyth Central, Riverside and Sprayberry. While the new region will not be as uniformly tough in football, the Warriors will face spirited competition against teams like Kell and Creekside, both of which have fielded state championship teams. Where the old region was more football dominated–making for plenty of punishing fall Friday nights for Warrior players and fans– the new region sports a more even competitive landscape, with strong programs in all sports, including spring sports, where North Atlanta has historically been more competitive. Baseball, tennis, lacrosse, and soccer could be facing tougher schedules than they’ve faced in years past.

Warrior athletes have received the news on a positive note. “Even though competition was fierce in the old region, I’m excited for the new competition of the new region,” said Alexandria Wilson, a sophomore on the Warrior softball team.
