Despite the team’s short-lived tenure of just a mere two campaigns, the North Atlanta Ultimate Frisbee team has reached incredible heights that many within the Dubs community could not have even once gleaned to be possible. Captain and founder Jake Nelson, however, knew this success was in the making, as he and his older brother Sam had this idea of an ultimate team at NAHS brewing in 2022. After Sam’s graduation, Jake carried out this brilliant Nelson-led plan and opened the team to anyone willing to join and ready to rock the gray and black for frisbee. This included girls at North Atlanta as well, which is where senior starlet Taylor So came into the fold. The hard work and brilliance of So has led her to the illustrious commitment to the University of Georgia, where she looks to further extend her career and flex her talents on a much bigger stage.
Being a rookie to the program has proved to be of such mere importance to So and the squad throughout the year, as her veteran status spans across a whopping 14 years of her life. Starting from the young age of 4, So has been throwing around the frisbee with her parents since being just a kid. While it was always just harmless fun back then, she always wondered whether she could take her talents to the next step up. Through her research, starting all the way back in middle school, she discovered ultimate frisbee, a game that she ended up growing to love. However, most of the people that she saw in all of the videos of ultimate frisbee were men, which made her even more determined to be a pioneer of the game and show that the playing field was even to the masses. “Through my commitment, I hope to inspire young girls who have a dream to throw the frisbee just like I once had. I want to make that lasting impact,” said So.
So’s first year for the Dubs, while the season has yet to start, has proven to be a revelation that everyone else on the team was not quite expecting. Through the preseason, she is already showing out and flexing her dominance, solidifying her superstar status. While this was monumental to the North Atlanta squad, to the masses this is simply “business as usual”. From her times in middle school on, So has competed nationally for the United States co-ed Ultimate Frisbee teams for each age group, with each coach she’s had raving about her immense skill set. These national team selections led her to plenty of eyes being placed on her as she emerged into the spotlight, with plenty of colleges asking for her commitment. In the end, she chose her hometown team and favorite college ever, signing the dotted lines to join the Georgia Bulldogs roster in 2026. “Being a lifelong Georgia fan, it was like a no-brainer for me. I wanna represent where I’m from and make the whole state proud,” said So.
With the North Atlanta squad wrapping up their preseason workouts and training, So looks to lead them in their quest of winning a state championship in just their second year of existence. While a lofty feat to say the very least, the addition of So makes the chances of the Dubs much greater than they once were. The first challenge? Going to Lovett and defeating the Lions in the coming weeks in the first showdown of the year.
