Creativity meets competition at the Columbus State University Art Throwdown Invitational, where the state’s most talented artists gather for a day of learning and teamwork. Each participating school selects the top art students to compete in various artistic categories. The day begins with a 30-minute professional workshop, followed by a two-hour timed challenge in which students create an original piece applying what they’ve learned.
North Atlanta has a strong legacy at this event, with students placing in the top three in nearly every category over the past years. This year’s group of 14 artists aims to continue that tradition. In preparation, they’ve been refining techniques and experimenting with new media, eager to showcase their abilities under pressure. Unlike typical art contests, the Throwdown highlights diverse disciplines, including animation, art history, and metal work, fields that test both technical skill and creativity.
All students going to this competition are extremely talented and ready to showcase their talents. They have spent many months and a lot of effort refining their craft and perfecting difficult techniques, and now they’re all incredibly excited to participate in the competition. Senior participant Iris Monaco says, “It’s really cool because I can learn from professionals and use the skills in new art. I also want to do art in college, so it’s so exciting to have this experience and this all on my resume.” Her enthusiasm reflects the passion shared by the NAHS art students as they go to represent the school at this competition. With this enthusiasm, the members are ready to dominate the competition at the Art Throw Down.
Beyond the competition, students have the opportunity to compete in the Most Valuable Artist Award, which comes with a $5,000 scholarship at GSU. To be a candidate for this award, students must submit an artwork that follows the theme of the year. The pieces are displayed and judged during the competition. The competition will conclude with an awards ceremony, and the winners of every category will be recognized for all their hard work.
This competition brings along excitement for students and teachers alike. For the participants it is more than just a contest but a celebration of their creativity and hard work. Whether they get the award or simply return with new skills, all students will hopefully walk away with a deeper appreciation for their craft. No matter the outcome, the experience will hopefully leave a lasting impression on all aspiring artists.
