As a senior, Eva Shade stands at the podium not just as our drum major but as the heartbeat of the band, a role she has carried for three years. She became the youngest drum major in school history as a sophomore, and she has spent nearly her entire high school career leading with strength and focus. Now in her final year, her steady leadership continues to inspire everyone around her and sets a standard future drum majors will work hard to match.
Taking on the role at such a young age was no small task. Eva understood the pressure and knew that it would be a big step from marching in the band to directing it. Going through high school with so much responsibility was difficult, but Shade was able to push through and make it to her final year of high school with good grades and never missing a practice. Usually, the drum majors are juniors or seniors, but I was just really passionate and I wanted to have this role,” Shade says.
Through long practices and countless games, Eva’s leadership has set the standard for what commitment looks like. Her calm presence on the field or court and her drive during rehearsals has strengthened the band both musically and emotionally. Eva has set a standard that everyone will look up to and strive to be throughout their high school career. What Eva has built here will echo long after she graduates.
This role didn’t just change the band, but it also changed Shade. Leading rehearsals and mentoring her replacement has shown her that teaching is her calling. After spending years bringing out the talent in the band, she has decided that she wants to teach, and next fall, Eva will be going to college and majoring in music education. Shade is not yet sure where she will be going to college, but anywhere she goes, she’ll be ready to lead the same way she has here.
“This whole experience has really taught me that I love music and I love to teach people, and I really think this will be the best path for me,” she said.
As Eva prepares to leave North Atlanta, she leaves behind more than just memories, she leaves a mark on the program itself. Her journey from the youngest drum major to a seasoned senior leader shows her unmatched courage and determination. The band is better because of her and future students will be too.
