Every once in a while something insane happens in the SEC that makes everyone stop and stare. So, with recent events, you can imagine the countless emotion-filled words exchanged among North Atlanta Warriors laced with hate and endless criticism. Standing in the middle of this chaos is the one and only Lane Kiffin, who used to be the coach of the Ole Miss Rebels. Oh, he also used to coach Louisiana State, the Oakland Raiders, the University of Tennessee, and Florida Atlantic. In other words, this guy has wreaked havoc. After his surprising decision to bolt out the back door for the “hot new chick” LSU, who has big-budget energy, fans are no different than the emotional maturity of a toddler who lost their juice box.
A few ornery toddlers are a lot to handle, but a herd of more than 21,000 20-year-old Ole Miss toddlers, that’s unbearable. This doesn’t even count the Rebel alumni and those with Oxford on the horizon. Breaking up with this many people at once after six seasons of a successful relationship is cold-blooded betrayal, and everyone knows it. This includes Junior Mary Emmet Pittman, who is still processing the fallout and experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions since Kiffin’s announcement. “I knew it could happen,” she said. “But I never thought it actually would. The fact that he left for just a little more money even though he’s already mega rich is crazy. Just wow.”
While Oxford rages, Baton Rouge pops the champagne. Not only is their rival Ole Miss suffering in disrepair while sulking in red and blue, LSU is at a turning point in their football program. Fans are counting on Kiffin’s elite ideas and clear success (while already planning on bragging about it). The Dubs community of Tigers are glazing their shiny toy to anyone willing to listen, as if they hired him on their own. Junior Ethan Fleming is among these celebrating, mirroring the confidence of much of the fanbase. “I’m pumped for Lane Kiffin to coach LSU,” he said. “I mean, I’ve seen what he could do at Ole Miss, so I know it’s gonna be great.”
The Ole Miss fanbase is as disappointed in Kiffin as teachers are when the whole class uses ChatGPT on their essays. There’s shock, denial, and a whole lot of rage packed into one moment. Everyone thought they could trust Kiffin, but he turned out to be a man with commitment issues. Just like the teachers staring at chatted essays, Junior Greer McWhirter knows honesty was never on the table. “We trusted him,” she said. “Apparently, it didn’t matter.”
Loyalty matters in the SEC, especially to the Dubs. Apparently, not everyone gets the memo. Ole Miss learned this lesson the hard way, while Kiffin has already moved on. Since stepping into his private plane, he hasn’t bothered looking back.
