Instagram users have probably noticed a great change in their news feed lately, as “finsta” accounts have begun to take over the popular social media. Many Instagram users are now possessing two Instagram accounts—“finstas,” a fake account, and a “rinsta,” a real Instagram account. The reason for such an odd trend is simple: finstas are an easy way to get around the social media company’s strict rules.

A finsta is a fake Instagram account followed by only close friends of the user. Most users, specifically teenage girls, have a finsta to post things that would not be socially acceptable to post on their real account. “I post funny things on my finsta and cute things on my rinsta,” said junior Roya Register.

The new Instagram platform is the ultimate stress-free event. “Being able to post on my finsta so much easier because you don’t have to worry about being judged,” said junior Lesley Laws.

Finstas are the perfect way for users to feel more comfortable in their social media endeavors. The fact that finstas have become such a popular trend reveals how everyone, no matter how popular or unpopular, feels pressure when it comes to posting on social media. Until these unwritten social rules die, we will continue to hear the question, “finsta or rinsta?” quite often.
