A Grand Device: The new iPhone X weighs with an eye-popping $1,000 price tag.

On September 12, Apple CEO Tim Cook held a press conference on the new Apple campus in Cupertino, Calif.. Toward the end of the much ballyhooed gathering, he paused, and said: “Oh, and one more thing,” and with that the iPhone X was unveiled.

Physically, the iPhone X is quite different from its predecessors. The front of it is nearly entirely smooth without a home button. Instead, you have to use the power button to turn it on and your face to unlock it, as opposed to your finger. It also has two lenses on the back that are vertically aligned and glass on the back so you can charge it wirelessly.

Internally, not much has changed. Since it doesn’t have a home button, you must swipe up from the bottom of the screen in order to exit apps. Also, depending on where you swipe down from the top, you can either open the notification center or the control panel. Furthermore, the new model has additional camera modes and optical stabilization for both lenses, so it performs better in low-light when compared to other iPhones. Lastly, there are animated emojis that move based on your voice and face.

Despite the exciting innovations, some students believe the device is extremely superfluous, especially since the price is equivalent to the cost of a vacation in Hawaii. Junior Addie Derrick believes there are better ways to use $1000. “I would rather go out to a concert and then to some fancy restaurant than spend all of that money on something that I can get for way less,” she said.

Senior Grant Paul offered a similar position. “Just because someone has a bunch of money doesn’t mean you should go out and spend so much money on something that has the same capabilities of a normal touchscreen,” he said. “Why pay $1,000 for an iPhone with a large screen when you can buy a Note8 which probably has better specs, for $930?”

While it is an upgrade from its predecessors, the iPhone X is too much for too little. In other words, for a $1000, turning on the airplane mode should be able to send you on a vacation.
