This generation can be described as many things. Progressive, tech-savvy, innovative and most of all, the most adamant streamers the world has ever seen. The introduction of streaming has led to the demise of many beloved staples — R.I.P. Blockbuster — and yet has led to the limitless prosperity of mega-companies like Hulu and Netflix. Streaming shows is of the utmost importance, but costs can add up quickly. So, the burning question is: Is there any harm in sharing accounts with a friend?
It’s super easy to cheat the system and make show binging a group affair but, streaming services are paying a hefty price for this sneaky deception. It’s estimated that over 35 percent of millennials share their login with others. At first glance, this doesn’t seem like too big of a loss, but companies are losing millions upon millions of dollars per year. “Giving away passwords is absolutely not for me,” said junior Matthew Celeia. “It’s just not safe to give away information or break the rules like that.”

Streaming companies are having a difficult time pinpointing and attacking password sharing because there is no strong wall of defense on streaming accounts. Aside from username, password and a simple and easily-guessed security question, there is little to prevent sharing from happening. In such a technologically-driven society, having access to a streaming account for free is like winning the lottery.

Nobody enjoys having strangers involved in their personal affairs, especially when it comes to streaming.  Most students only plead guilty to password sharing with close and trusted friends. “I wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing my login with someone I don’t really know. I would only do it with a few close friends,” said junior Annabelle Sarkissian. “ I have no problem doing them a small favor.”

Despite its few disadvantages, password sharing seems to be the easiest way to go for bingers on a budget. Whether you’re fan of “The Office” or “Orange is the New Black,” remember, sharing is caring? Right? Let’s discuss.
