Bombs Away: Senior Zach Turner’s dedication for the game of baseball is bound to take him far. His next step is at Augusta University, where he plans to take his talents to play collegiate baseball.

Since the early age of three, senior Zach Turner has always been found on a field or a court, whether it was baseball, football, or basketball. Throughout the years of practices, games, and many athletic commitments, he grew to love the sport of baseball above all others and his talent for it became evident. With the dream of one day making it to the big leagues as a star, Turner is taking the steps necessary by committing to play collegiate baseball at the division two school Augusta University.

Like any sport, baseball is not all highs. The lows are just as much part of the game. Turner’s journey has been no different – full of invigorating wins, as well as times of doubt. Despite these periods of difficulty, Turner remained locked in to his game with determination, patience, and acceptance of the extra work needed. “There have been so many times when I thought this wasn’t the sport for me, but something inside always told me to be patient and everything else will unravel itself,” Turner said.

Getting to the point of a college commitment for any sport takes a lot of hard work and a particular mindset. Hard work will help you grow your talent. Resilience will ensure you get back up when doubt sets in. Patience will help accept that improvement takes time. Dedication ensures that you never give up. As Turner pointed out, it also takes a lot of anger, sadness, and stress. Sports aren’t all physical exertion, the mental side of them is just as large, and the emotions Turner has had to accept and overcome throughout his years on the field have helped him grow to be the player he is today – one with enough talent to stand out. “Only seven percent of the million people who play baseball get to have the opportunity I have,” Turner said. “I am very grateful for it.”

Despite the excitement of this next step in his baseball career, the heightened pressure is clear. Despite balancing school, a social life, and baseball throughout his teenage years, college level sports are a new level of commitment and competition. Many of those who make it to college teams aren’t prepared to put in the extra work necessary, but Turner is optimistic his mindset and attitude will lead him to success. “I honestly think I will adjust to life as a college athlete very well because I love the grind,” he said.

Behind every star is an incredible support system, and Turner is no exception. His family has supported him throughout his years on the field and their honesty and dedication have influenced his own determination and achievements. These factors have made baseball into one of the most important parts of Turner’s life. On the baseball field, Turner feels as if he can do anything.
