North Atlanta High School Orchestra Fall Concert

The North Atlanta High School Orchestra’s Fall Concert will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at North Atlanta in the Linda Stevenson Theatre. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m.

The North Atlanta orchestras are under the direction of Stephen Lawrence Orchestra first chairs are sophomores Desiree Emory, Summer Epps and Patrick Wilson.

Lawrence has worked hard to prepare the more than 100 North Atlanta students who participate in the school’s three orchestras from his concert, symphonic and philharmonic classes. Orchestral pieces for the concert will include folk songs like “Evening Prayer” by Humperdinck and “Sanseneon” by Robert Frost, among other pieces. Lawrence said the piece “Suite for Strings” which the philharmonic will perform, is one of the strongest works that audiences will witness.

An evening highlight will come when all three orchestras will play Halloween-themed pieces titled “Assemble the Minions” and “The Curse Of The Rosin-Eating Zombies.”

Orchestra students are accustomed to their daily rituals, such as warm-up, tuning and rehearsal. In the philharmonic orchestra, rituals become difficult if the group’s only bass player is absent or out sick. Because of his importance to the group, bassist Wilson soldiered on throughout the fall and did not miss any rehearsals. “In my professional opinion, Patrick has been doing an outstanding job performing and staying prepared for class,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence has been playing the violin for 19 years and has performed in more than 10 orchestras and has been chosen to be concertmaster of eight different orchestras. He is principle second violin for Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra based in Atlanta and is also a violinist for the Idalia String Quartet.
