Film festival planner Paige Overmyer celebrates the big success with Principal Douglass on the practice field.

If you didn’t make it to the Film Festival on Friday, April 15 then you undoubtedly missed out on a good night. The doors, or should I say gate to the practice field, opened up for everybody at 6 p.m. and the event ended at 9 p.m. Plus, the award-winning films started at a very special time that left the students mesmerized with the surrounding sunset.

The festival was comprised of short films created by students. The whole event was similar to when Piedmont Park shows movies on the lawn. SGA officer and senior Paige Overmyer and the rest of SGA imagined a group of more than 100 high-schoolers coming out to show support for not only their school, but their classmates too. “I wanted this to be a ‘Screen on the Green’ kind of thing. Something that everyone can come out to and enjoy,” said Overmyer.

You know that moment when you stay after school for something and you quickly regret it while simultaneously wishing you were at home watching Netflix? The film festival wasn’t one of those nights, and it truly gave Piedmont Park a run for its money. Giant hamster balls, inflatable basketball, blow-up football, an awesome DJ, and kids dancing left and right on a large field all added up for boatloads of fun.

And no one had to worry about getting hungry because clubs were selling every tasty festival food imagined. Grilled pineapples, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, donuts, cake, brownies, sundaes and homemade lemonade were just some of the goodies that were served.

Beyond the many activities and mouth-watering treats, the best part of the night was watching student films. The creative minds of our students put together incredibly expressive, yet brief films. A few of these young directors might just have a shot at the Hollywood big leagues one day.

The Spring Film Festival was undoubtedly of the best nights of the school year and easily surpassed paying $10 to go see an over exaggerated movie at AMC. Additionally it was a nice way for everyone in and outside of our school to come out and show support for our talented students. Looking at the stars on the screen while looking at the stars in the sky was definitely a dazzling way to pass an evening.
