The number of students who wear yoga pants to school continues to grow.

Jean companies across the country are being negatively impacted by the sudden growing popularity of yoga pants. Yoga pants are flying off the shelves and mostly being worn by teenagers.

Yoga pants are lightweight stretchy pants that can be worn as casual attire or dressed up, which is one of the reasons why they’re so popular. “Yoga pants are definitely more comfy than jeans. I can move around easier in them,” said junior Roya Register.

Jean companies are being hit hard by the sudden demand for yoga pants. Jeans used to be all kids could wear to school and to other activities, with no competition. Now, yoga pants are taking the market by storm and for a few main reasons.

The rise in popularity of yoga pants among teenagers is partially due to lower prices. Yoga pants can range anywhere from around $25 to $70 while popular jeans from expensive brands like (?) can cost up to $200. “Yoga pants are more comfy, I can wear them anywhere, and they’re cheaper, so why would I even buy jeans?” said junior Leah Horner.

Aside from being cheaper than jeans, they are also easier to find and to buy. With jeans you have to go to the mall, try on multiple types, sizes, and colors. But with yoga pants you can order them online or go to a store and quickly find the perfect pair. One size can fit many different body types because of their stretchy material, which is just another reason why yoga pants are so popular.

Jean companies are worried for the future of denim. Levi’s, which is the world’s most popular denim company, have seen sales drop from $7 billion to $4.8 billion. “We’re scrambling. There’s a big difference in what we’re selling and what the consumer is looking for, and we’re just completely missing out,” said Levi’s CEO Chip Berg in an interview with Business Insider.

Jean companies are facing a tough future ahead as markets are demanding lighter apparel from stores such as Lululemon and Nike. It will be interesting to see if jeans make a comeback or if yoga pants will run companies, such as Levi’s, out of business.
