While it might be too cold for the bees, there is still a buzz in the air as spring sports gear up for the season. As tryouts approach, coaches start to iron out plans for their team. The goals set by coaches are anything but easy, and accomplishing them takes everything an athlete can give. Coaches set these because the athletic standard is high at North Atlanta and they want their players to understand that.
The Dubs Track and Field team is back up and running and looking towards the future. Coming off an amazing season of being APS champs and the region championship, Coach Bryce Doe looks for the team to repeat. “If we are able to win both meets again, it sets the whole team up for State instead of just one or two runners,” said Coach Doe.
Coming off a down year, the men’s lacrosse team is looking to turn the program around. New head coach Jack Chase is looking to make an instant impact. “My goal is to help our players grow on and off the field,” said Coach Chase. “No matter what adversity we face.”
The men’s soccer team is coming off of a great regular season but a disappointing playoff loss last year. Coach Epi Jimenez is determined to change the narrative. “I want to make a deep playoff run,” said Coach Epi. “It comes from the boys competing everyday and winning our personal battles.”
The third week of January marks the start of the Diamond Dubs season. Last year the baseball team had a state playoff appearance, and the goal is to repeat that again even with a younger squad and a loaded region. “We are used to playing on the road so not much should need to change,” said Coach Ricky Plante. “We just need to work hard and do what we do.”
Tennis has had significant success in recent seasons. Both teams are looking to compete in the region and qualify for state. The girls tennis team is looking for individual improvements and the boys are looking to make a deeper run in the playoffs. “I want both teams to compete,” said Coach Johnston. “I want to improve them as people and as players.”
A similar story unfolds on the grass with the golf team. After qualifying for state last year, the Dubs hope to do the same again and compete for an even further run. “I want both teams to qualify for the tournament,” said Coach Credit. “I also want one or two members competing for the individual state title.”
This spring, North Atlanta sports are no joke, and their work ethic will back up their ambitious goals as Dubs always do.
